The story of the Copenhagen Carnival

This web project was a large online portal which focused on the Copenhagen Carnival, whose roots go all the way back to 1982, as well as the Danish Samba Schools and the Fastelavn tradition.

Culture communication & Danish cultural history

Karneval.dk was the grassroots’ own site, also known as “sambistas”, which stands for the entertainment itself via music and dance in parades and stage shows.

When the association Karneval i Købehavn (K.I.K.) threw in the towel in 2008, I was given the domain name so that it was not lost after the association unfortunately had to declare bankruptcy. A short time later, I started on my own imitation, creating the portal, which later turned out to take an unimaginably long time to build.

Due to the many changing organizers/associations in the Copenhagen Carnival, this web project had to be proven to be run independently and privately. Therefore, it could also only be done in the spare time and be unpaid.

The purpose of the project was to provide opportunities for samba schools and groups as well as various associations etc. to have one place online, with all information about what was happening within the Danish carnival environment gathered here.

It took me approx. four years of research alone and the search for material, and here I met many people who supported the project with contributions in the form of old robber stories, dusty boxes and folders with lots of old photos, association magazines, badges, posters, flyers, etc.

The project existed from 2008 to April 2019 and was “rebooted” january 2024
