Peder Severin (Søren) Krøyer, 1851 – 1909.

Peder Severin Krøyer (born 23 July 1851 in Stavanger; died 20 or 21 November 1909 in Skagen) was a Danish painter – and one of the Danish Skagen painters. He was born in Norway, but grew up with his aunt in Copenhagen. His uncle was the Danish zoologist Henrik Nikolai Krøyer. The initials P.S. stood for Peder Severin; he was called Søren by his friends. Krøyer’s signature was often S. K. His works are among the most expensive Danish paintings at auction, several having achieved prices in excess of millions.

Today Krøyer is considered one of the most significant Danish painters. He is particularly famous for his pictures from Skagen, where he lived for a number of years. Among the Skagen painters, Krøyer was undisputedly the most virtuoso, and with very few means he was able to create a simple, yet magnificent, composition where light and color merged into a higher unity. His world of motifs revolved especially around the coastal landscape, walks on the beach, atmospheric evenings in the moonlight, family life and the festive gatherings of the Skagen painters.

This web project focuses on Krøyer’s life and his many impressive works of art. No one has really tried to collect his works and tell his story online before, other than sporadically such as Wikipedia and various auction houses, as well as social media where images and text disappear in “doomscrolling”.

This is the first initiative where you can find a comprehensive overview of Krøyer’s works, ranging from sculpture, graphics and not least his impressive masterpieces, with accompanying information about what is known about the work. You can search, read articles, and see an impressive photo collection from Krøyer’s life.

The web project is a counterpart and a supplement to www.Marie-Krøyer.dk which has stood alone since 2016. Finally the old couple is back together, but just as they were divorced – they also each have their own website.

As far as is known, this is the first time that P.S. Krøyer has had his own biographically elaborated website. It is an open project where everyone is welcome to contribute and a gift to everyone with an interest in art history and biography. It has been a long journey to create, but in all gratitude, a huge honor to learn “Søren’s” history in detail. I have enjoyed every second of working on this project. I hope it helps to provide insight into this impressively great artist and joy among those who surf past the website.
